Day Nine: Peaceful Fighters

I'm not sure I will be able to convey, in this blog, how incredibly grateful I am for the thousands and thousands of peaceful fighters I have been following for 17-18 days in Egypt. Wow.
Peaceful Fighters. Sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it? Probably because for years upon years, we have been shown no example OTHER than non-peaceful fighting. Battlefields, guns, knives, fists, bombs, hijackings, etc. And somewhere, in the middle of all of this loud, non-peaceful, violent fighting, there have been voices. Voices wanting peace. Voices saying there are other ways. But they've been quieted. Told they are un-patriotic, or naive. Told this was the only way to get where we wanted to be, and we should be thankful. Well. I am thankful for where we are...but right now...I am so grateful to be able to say that those quiet voices, preaching peace and understanding - telling us to put down guns and find another way - they have overcome. Those voices overcame in Egypt today. And that gives me hope. And an added kick to my step.
So to all of you who ache over the violence we see. All of you who yearn for the day when we stop killing each other. All of you who have been working to create peace where you live. Hold on to this day. Watch the celebration of the people in Tahrir Square. It got sticky. It got scary. And it was not perfect. But they pushed on. And they did so with as much peace and confidence as they could. Hang in there...peace mongers!
